A U.S. citizen may also petition for non-immediate relatives. These relatives fall under the Family Preference categories:

Family Preference Categories:

• F1 – Family First Preference:
  Unmarried sons and daughters (21 or older) of U.S. citizens, and their children (if any)

• F2 – Family Second Preference:
  Spouses, minor children, and unmarried sons and daughters (21 or older) of lawful permanent residents

• F3 – Family Third Preference:
  Married sons and daughters of U.S. citizens, along with their spouses and children

• F4 – Family Fourth Preference:
  Brothers and sisters of U.S. citizens (U.S. citizen must be at least 21), and their spouses and children

The filing date of the petition becomes the priority date. A visa number becomes available when that priority date is reached. In some oversubscribed categories, applicants may wait several years. Refer to the Visa Bulletin for the most current priority dates.

Note: Grandparents, aunts, uncles, in-laws, and cousins cannot sponsor relatives for immigration.

• U.S. citizen or legal permanent resident must file Form I-130 Petition for Alien Relative
• Supporting documents proving family relationship must accompany the petition
• Only U.S. citizens may file for F1, F3, and F4 categories
• F2 petitions can be filed by lawful permanent residents
